Travel planning around surgery: What you need to know

travel planning around surgery

Thinking about having a procedure before your next trip? Many patients think that a trip right after surgery is the best way to recover, but this is often not the case. There are many factors that need to be kept in mind. Smart planning is key to ensuring you look and feel your best without compromising your results or recovery. If you are planning on traveling in the weeks after your surgery, definitely discuss your travel plans with your surgeon so they can weigh in on whether or not a trip will put your results, or your health, in jeopardy.  Here are some general factors to keep in mind:

You will have follow ups

Surgical procedures require you to have follow ups in the office. Check with your surgeon for how long you need to be in town.

Know the Downtime

Each procedure has a different healing timeline:

  • Injectables (Botox, fillers): Minimal downtime, but allow a week before photos or events for any occasional swelling/bruising to subside & for the Botox to fully kick in.
  • Breast augmentation, tummy tuck, lipo: Plan for at least 4–6 weeks of recovery before strenuous activities or swimming.
  • Facial surgeries (eyelid, facelift, rhinoplasty): Allow 2–3 months for swelling to fully resolve if you’re aiming for an event or vacation “reveal”. Going to be a guest at a destination wedding? You want to look your absolute best! Give yourself extra time to make sure all healing has occurred.

Avoid the Sun

Surgical sites are extra sensitive to UV rays. If your vacation involves sun exposure:

  • Bring medical-grade SPF 50+
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing
  • Stay out of direct sun during peak hours

Skip Long Flights Too Soon

Ask your surgeon how long you need after your surgery before you can fly so you reduce the risk of swelling, blood clots, or complications. Remember that no heavy lifting includes your carry ons and luggage! No hoisting into the overhead bins or grabbing your bag from the luggage carosel if you’ve been told no lifting. Also make sure you are up to any excessive walking through larger airports (depending upon what type of surgery you had).

Bonus Tip: Let Healing Be Part of the Plan

Many patients choose to stay local during recovery and use vacation time to heal in privacy and comfort. Think of it as a “staycation with a glow-up.”
